Great Book!, 2010-06-08 I am a counsellor seeing people suffering with a variety of depressive symptoms. Most of them are trying to understand what's happening and why they can't just 'pull themselves together'. This is a great book to help with just that!
Easy to read in a short time (as most of the messages it gives are pictorial). This book can help not only people suffering from depression but also their partners, family members or friends, to understand what's happening to them.
I had a black dog, 2010-07-04 This is such a clever book. It describes what depression is like for the sufferer in an enlightened and clear way, without being bogged down in long worded descriptions. You almost become fond of the black dog in the pictures and feel sorry for him when he is being tricked. It describes the oncoming of depression and takes you through the stages. It is like a journey up a very steep hill and then you gradually take the down hill slope to managing the black dog with a selected few friends to help. Although this book is on a serious subject it has a really funny side and the pictures definitely speak loiuder than words.
Fantastic book!, 2010-04-12 I can't recommend this book enough - I have bought several copies and lend them to clients suffering from depression. The book's clever wording and superb illustrations manage to convey exactly what it is like to suffer from depression. This in itself can be very helpful as the sufferer no longer feels quite as alone and isolated as they may well have felt up until then. Secondly, many readers have said that they now see their depression in a different light - rather than seeing it as something they ARE, they can see it as something they HAVE and which, importantly, they can do something about (with the right sort of help and support#. This is a hugely important change, as, ultimately, this is the best way out of depression. And thirdly, the book is very helpful in enabling the relatives and friends of a sufferer to understand what he/she is going through, which makes it much easier for them to offer the right sort of support and encouragement.
So, if you (or someone you love) are suffering from the black dog, get hold of a copy, read it carefully, read it again and again, as many times as you need to . . . and then pass it on, if you can bear to, to others in the same boat.
Given to others, 2010-05-24 Bought this book and found it was really good, so much so i gave a copy to my doctors surgery to show to patients and doctors alike. I am amazed at the simplicity but also like the way it is in picture format I find that easier to cope with!!
I had a black dog, 2010-06-28 I bought this for my husband who is a new depression sufferer. He identified with the large majority of the pictures and was inspired by the 'fetch' cartoon. Depression is a horrendous illness and incredibly hard to understand and this helps give a little insight.
