Average rating of 5/5 An essential gardening book, 2010-09-09
Dr D.G. Hessayon's gardening books are an absolute must own if you have a garden, or are about to get a garden, or don't own a garden but look after one for someone else, or just like reading about gardening. Gets straight to the point of telling you what you need to know.

This one is no exception, especially if you intend to grow more than just Trees, Flowers & Grass.

Aside from having a pretty cover, it contains all you need to know to choose & grow: Apples, Pears, Plums & Gages, Cherries, Peaches, Nectarines, Apricots, Figs, Mulberries, Quinces, Strawberries, Raspberries, Blackberries, Boysenberry, Dewberry, Hildaberry, Japanese Wineberry, Loganberry (and a few other berries you probably didn't know existed), Blackcurrants, Gooseberries, Red Currants, White Currants, Cranberries, Blueberries, Grapes, Melons & Kiwi Fruit.

It also helps you identify various varieties of fruit, and also identify what's gone horribly wrong if your fruit develops a problem.

It also has a section on shop bought fruits, with old favourites + some not many people know exist.

There's also advice on various maintenance tasks, such as pruning.

It doesn't contain advice on growing Rhubarb, if your looking for that......... it's on page 88 of the Vegetable and Herb Expert, which is an excellent partner to this book.

Average rating of 5/5 The Fruit Expert DR D.G. Hessayon, 2009-12-12
Recommended by a local expert in fruit planting and grafting I was somewhat apprehensive about purchasing something which might prove to be beyond my needs. No need for apprehension, this is an easily readable and understandable book even for someone with nul knowledge of fruit growing. The type font and diagramatic representations are kindly on the eye and you get the feeling that this really is the information and education that will be required to be successful in rearing fruit of a wide variety. Clearly there is more to growing fruit than this book but it does give you the wherewithal to navigate round the subject. Essential starting point and great value, it just remains to be seen if it will bear fruit (might have to wait 2-5 years)!!

Older edition than expected but I should have double checked this. Otherwise as described but no rhubarb section in this edition.

Average rating of 5/5 The Fruit Expert, 2009-09-13
The Dr. Hessayon series of 'expert' books are without doubt the most informative and useful books on my garden bookself. The colour illustrations accompanying the easily layout text make easy reading and support any aspect of the garden you are working on. I have just bought a mini fruit orchard from a newspaper advert and knew I would also need 'THE FRUIT EXPECT' to ensure I get the best out of my new project. I highly recommend these books.

Average rating of 4/5 Easy to use , quick reference book, 2009-10-01
