Average rating of 2/5 Half background to EDs / Half self help, 2008-09-14
The first half of this book covers the facts about binge eating. This may be helpful for someone who needs the background about EDs but as someone who has had an ED for many years, it was unnecessary and there was nothing in it that I didn't already know.

The second half is a self help program broken down into 6 steps (Getting started, Regular eating, Alternatives to binge eating, Problem solving and taking stock (probably the most useful chapter based on 6 CBT style steps), Diet and related forms of food avoidance and What's next.

The good majority of the second half was quite redunant and as I am undergoing CBT with a therapist at the moment, there was no point keeping the book for one chapter.

This book was recommended by the clinic at my local hospital

it gives practical advice and the cause of binge eating

I would advise anyone with this problem to purchase a copy

Average rating of 5/5 A lightbulb moment..., 2009-10-26
I'm only a few pages in and this book has just switched on a 'lightbulb' in me. It's describing ME! I thought I was the only person who behaved like this but it seems I'm not. I've been binge eating since my late teens which is nearly 30 years now. I'm obese but not morbidly so. I'm desperate to break this cycle of secretive eating and I'm really hoping this book will get me to where I want to be. I know there is probably a lot of self-will needed when I get to the 'programme' part of the book but, for now, I know I'm not alone, that I'm not barmy and that my lack of self-control when it comes to food is a recognised thing. Give it a try yourself!

Average rating of 4/5 Overcoming Binge Eating will do the trick, 2009-06-15
Great book - has been a well thumbed read and I expect that it will become like my bible for now.

Average rating of 5/5 Intelligent, comprehensive and effective., 2009-10-21
Tone: The tone of the book is compassionate but logical. While reading it I never felt bullied or moralised to, nor did I feel like the author was buddying up to me in the false, "You go girl!"-type way that some authors do.

Information: I had read a lot about eating disorders before this book, but here I found new, helpful information, presented in a very clear way.

Efficacy: Thumbs up! "Overcoming Binge Eating" is the first and only piece of writing to help me with binge eating and bulimia. I particularly recommend it to anyone who's at the end of their tether - who's tried all sorts of things and still can't seem to get a handle on their problem. I was at that stage, and I still find it amazing that the book helped me change as much as it did. I'm far healthier and happier now in regards to eating.

It's worth noting also that I read the book years ago and am still doing well because of it. (YAY!)
