An Essential Companion, 2010-07-12 This is without doubt a brilliant book. In the opening chapters, I found the "History Taking" to be exceptionally well covered, it was both concise and yet detailed to help me build on the basic structure I have acquired thus far at Nottingham. I don't doubt that I will refer to this chapter in the future.
In order to make the most of this book you will need to accustom yourself with the layout, which I found initially somewhat strange if/when I referred to it sporadically but once you've read a chapter through it all makes The chapter is laid out to initially introduce the system and a diagram of the body identifying areas of examination and what to look for, leading on to a refresh of the anatomy and the symptoms/definitions relevant to that chapter. In this regard it is quite comprehensive and should comfortably get you through MedSchool OSCE's.
There are numerous diagrams and tables ideal for quick reference. The diagrams in particular are excellent, they're very clear, and this sort of text would not be complete with pictures dotted around. Importantly there is no excess of laborious text, which is very handy. For those who prefer to read paragraphs of solid text, the tables/diagrams may actually be somewhat irritating although I was comfortable with it.
I used this book for my second year OSCE's and found that the videos (on the DVD) were helpful (though a couple of them are insanely formal and thus quite patronising to watch), I can't see myself using the videos a lot in the future, somehow I don't feel they are all that detailed, but for the level I am currently at it was certainly useful, I suspect this aspect will be improved in the future editions.
In conclusion this book cannot really fail to give you a solid foundation to start with, and so consequently serves its purpose. We've heard it said before that such skills are best learnt at the bedside, an aid like this will not go astray!
Really informative, 2010-01-10 This book was recommended to me and I am glad I took their advice. Lots of good information, easy to find and a good resource for learning clinical exams.
Not the best, but still a good buy, 2010-01-17 Of course, clinical examination should be learnt at the bedside but everyone needs to start somewhere. Macleod's tries to combine history and examination together whilst remaining concise. As a result, whilst it is a good text to start your clinical firms with in 2nd year and even to take beyond, you'll find that it is comprehensive in neither area. When I moved into the central teaching hospitals/firms with higher standards and expectations, it just didn't cover everything I hoped it would, and I think that it is particularly weak in its surgical section. That said, it is very readable and colourful, and I would recommend it to any student.
This seems to be the most popular clinical examination textbook at my medical school, and many people buy it by default - but I recently took the plunge and switched away from it. I used 10th ed as my first clinical examination textbook and more recently had a copy of 11th ed out on permenant loan from the library, and it is definately an improvement on the previous edition.
Bottom line is: Certainly you will pass OSCEs, PACES and finals by using this book. But I have recently discovered that there are better (and similarly colourful) clinical examination textbooks out there if you want to set a higher than average standard for yourself.

Clinical examination, 2010-06-28 Hi everybody! I purcahsed this book (Macleod'S Clinical Examination) , and I'm quite happy about it. It is a real help for medical students as well as for junior doctors who are about to start their first job in hopspita.
Good luck everyone.
Macleod's Clinical Examination, 2010-05-16 This book is exactly what I was expecting except for the fact that I cannot get the DVD to work. I am using Windows XP Service Pack 3. I have logged in to the Student Consult website but as yet I have had little chance to use it due to work committments.
