Excellent, 2005-09-08 The books by Williams and Carter are excellent. As an inexperienced beginner microscopist, I trawled through a lot of textbooks and generally ended up baffled at some point - until, that is, I found this one. They assume no prior knowledge of TEM whatsoever and address common misconceptions held by novices, explaining everything clearly and simply. Everything is treated in an informal but thorough style which makes you feel as though you're reading word-for-word the transcript of a particularly good set of lectures. I think a whole generation of microscopists are grateful to the authors...thoroughly recommended!
The TEM bible for all physical science grad students., 2000-10-04 If you were to classify the hundreds of TEM books available nearly all would sit in the technically proficent but hard to absorb category, and most would also cover one small area of the subject in great detail. Very few people have managed, in any scientific field, to produce a book that is both exahaustive and a good read. Dave Willimas and Barry Carter have succeeded on both fronts. As a new grad student this book was my constant companion and is still often my first resort when faced with a microscopy problem. It is clearly strucured, consisely written, filled with usefull references, clear and well drawn diagrams and comes in managable chunks each of which is well introduced and summarised. Apologies for the cliche: but if you only ever buy one TEM book, make it this one.
